A study on the infection control in the intensive care unit

Abstract
This study was performed to evaluate the status of bacterial contamination of medical instruments, materials and medical personnels of intensive care unit in this hospital. Bacterial contamination were evaluated in hands and nostrils of 38
medical
personnels before hand washing and reevaluated in 16 medical personnels after hand washing immediately. The specimens obtained from above were cultured using Blood agar plate, Mac-Conkey agar, Fluid Thioglycollate medium and cultured
microorganisms
identified by conventional methods and ATB 32GN system.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1) The organisms cultured from the medical instruments and materials were Staphylococcus aureus, Acinetobacter baumannii, Acinetobacter species, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus species, Serratia marcescens, Klebsiella pneumonia and
Moraxiella
species. The frequently isolated organisms were Staphylococcus aureus and Acinetobacter baumannii.
2) The hospital microorganisms were recovered 76% among the 38 medical personnels. The isolated microorganisms from hands and nostrils were Acinetobacter baumannii, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus species, Enterobacter cloacae, Enterobacter
aerogenes, Serratia marcescens, Klebsiella pneumonia and Streptococcus viridans. Also, the common mcroorganisms were Acinetobacter baumannii(42.0%) and Staphylococcus aureus(36.8%). But no isolated hospital microorganism was recovered by hand
washing.
@ES Conclusion;
@EN The establishment of effective infection infection control program and frequent hand washing of medical personnels throughout persistent education might make a significant contribution to prevent nosocomial spread of infections agents.
